Husam Sam Asi is a film journalist, producer and scientist. He founded UKScreen in 1999, produced and presented BBC Cinematic on BBC Arabic TV until 2022, and founded Resala Productions.
His work spans film interviews, cultural reporting and production. Over more than two decades he interviewed many of the filmmakers and actors who shaped modern cinema, from Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton and Clint Eastwood to Angelina Jolie, Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. His interviews appeared on BBC News and were picked up by CNN and Fox News, and until 2022 he wrote a film column for Al-Quds Al-Arabi.
Productions
He founded Resala Productions, a London-based company that invests in, develops and produces films and TV shows centred on Middle Eastern themes. Its slate includes The Gate of Heaven, The LA 8 and The General’s Son. Earlier, he wrote, produced, edited and directed the short films Pleasure Marriage (2005) and Regression (2009). Science
He holds a BSc in Physics, an MSc in Medical Sciences and a PhD in Visual Neuroscience, and his research on the retina was published in journals including The Journal of Physiology and Visual Neuroscience. Explore his scientific publications.
Charity
His charitable work includes founding Asi Kindergarten in the Shatila refugee camp in 2020 and sponsoring cancer treatment for children in the West Bank and Gaza. Read more.
