It’s rare for documentaries to feature in the top 10 box office earner, hence there was a good reason for the conservatives in the US to celebrate when the documentary 2016: Obama’s America, which expanded nationwide over the weekend, ranked 8th with $6.2 million. It has grossed $9.1 million since its limited released last month.The Obama’s America was promoted heavily by talk shows and timed its nationwide expansion to the republican National Convention, which was supposed to begin today in storm-stricken Florida, but many attributes the documentaries box office success to the lack of weekend major new releases.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt action thriller Premium Rush opened in the 7th spot with a muted $6.3 million and indie comedy Hit & Run, starring Kristen Bell and Bradley Cooper, debuted in the 10th place with a disappointing $4.7 million.

The top ranks of the box office were dominated by Holdovers, such as The Expendables 2, which held to its number 1 in the US and overseas with $13 million and over $15.3 million (final tally is yet to be released) respectively. The action sequel features veteran auctioneers such as Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Another action sequel, The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz, followed in the second spot in the US box office with a cume of $9.3 million. The film ranked no. 7 overseas with $9.4 million.

The third place in the US was claimed by Stop-motion comedy ParaNorman, which earned $8.5 million, followed by Will Ferrell political comedy The Campaign, which drew $7.4 million.

Still strong in the game, The Dark Knight Rises conquered the fifth spot in the US with $7.2 million and the second spot overseas, where it surpassed the $500 million gross mark ($519 million).

Pixar animation Brave claimed the 3rd spot overseas with $14.6 million followed by Colin Farrell remake Total Recall, which generated $13.8 million.
